Step Your Rap Game Up...

And when i say that... i mean it.. and i mean it immediately...
So I was listenin to one of my new favorite songs.. "SO Fly" by Slim of 112.. Beat, nice... Singing, good... Lyrics, Something I could live by.. feel me? So fly... Ima Flyy Boy.. so of course ima feel it right? So they have this remix to it now.. with Shawty Lo on it.. You prolly already know where this is goin... So this nigga starts off the song now.. Let me tell you what one of his lyrics are...

"A, E, I/ I, O, U/ sometimes Y?/ That can't be true"

Theres nothing else to say.. theres no way that I could be takin this outta context.. this nigga just said the "Vowels" and put it in a RnB song.. This nigga said one of the most elementary things i've ever heard in a song.. You cant be serious LO.. wheres your real niggas at? Wheres the people thats posed to be in the studio with you like, "Dog, this shit was weak as fuck nigga.. what u mean AEI, IOU.. we aint in school nigga.. spit some fly shit over this beat".. where them niggas at? People.. be real with your friends if they rap...

Dru Hill gets their independence again... or should I say, InDRUpendence

R&B groups.... seemingly a thing of the past. In the 90s we had everybody from Boys 2 Men, SWV, Shai, Envouge, Silk, 702, Jagged Edge, Total, 112, Destiny's Child, Jodeci... I could keep going. But for the sake of your attention span......... anyway............ Dru Hill alwayz held the highest position in my favorite groups. From back in middle school when I first heard "Tell Me" and "Sleepin in My Bed" to when they seemingly bowed out in 2002 with "I should Be" and "I Love you". Even during the Sisqo dayz at the early part of the century. (Dont front like yo ass didnt used to bang the uck fay outta "Thong Song". I remember all yall wanting to be vickie models in Mr. Toles choir class....) Anyway, for those that don't know (which I dont know why youre reading if you dont) Dru Hill ruled the latter part of the 90's. From 5 Steps (one of the few videos that made your sensitive ass shed a couple tears) to "We're not Makin Love no More", "How Deep is your Love", The "Reeses Pieces song" (These are the Times), "Wild Wild West" with Will Smith. "Big Bad Momma" ft Foxy B... I mean, they had hit after hit. Then they disappeared. Everybody went off to making solo albums, with only Sisqo having significant success. Then after he fell off, they returned a couple years later. Only to disappear again.

I personally been waiting for a Dru Hill return since 2002 (all by myself too, lol) and then I hear sometime around Christmas 2007, that they had gotten back together. I aint gon lie, I was geeked. So I checked out the video. The video had a caption that read, "Dru Hill gets back together.... only to break up again, in 10 minutes...." Omg, are you serious (Watch the video if you want to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpm7oXKJOZY ) Apparently the member that went solo (Woody, for those who dont know) that originally helped break up the group (to pursue gospel by the way) decides during the reunion...... that he isn't going to return..... AGAIN..... to the group, because he wants to continue pursuing his gospel career. This breaks out a fight (Go ahead, you know u wanna watch it now, lol. Imagine little ass Sisqo fighting, lmao)

Anyway, I was distressed, cause I got my hopes up. Then a few months later, I found out they had recruited a new member. (Some homie named Tao or something). And then about a week ago, I heard they had released their first single. Its Called "Loose" or "Get Loose". One of the two. (You can go hear and listen to it: http://www.zshare.net/audio/12942321927700f7/ )

Now personally, I like it. And Im expecting it to grow on me. Its a slow jam (something they've alwayz been good at). But not a ballad. Its got that ol' skool flavor to it a lil bit, that I miss from the late 90s. Of Course its getting some hate, but mostly from the "kidz" (read: 18 and 19yr olds, who are too young to appreciate jodeci or dru hill, who think R. Kelly is a new artist, but Trey Songz is still better... I laugh at you) but Im looking forward to whenever they release their album, which will be called "InDRUpendence Day" by the way. I'll keep those interested updated. Just look for updates in this blog. Until then, enjoy the song, and "Get Loose". WHAT YOU THINK???

The Business behind Backseat Action

SoooOOO... a couple weeks ago as I was heading to work, Im sitting there listening to the new Gnarls Barkley CD for probably about the 49th time, and in the background I hear something interesting. 102.9 is playing in the background as alwayz (which is why I keep my CD player on) and I hear something famaliar. So I remove my headphones and an unfamaliar and female voice is singin, "you give me the business, you give me the business, you give me the business..." (you've heard it buy now, if not... head over to this link and take a quick listen www.myspace.com/yungberg ) so anyway, I listen a bit closer because like I said, it sounded famaliar... but not quite right. Im thinking to myself, "Remix, maybe?" Then the rapper comes in, and I cannot tell who it is. It sounds vaguely like Bow Wow, trying to utilize the auto-tune effect, which is annoying so popular these days, and the female singing sounded a little like Nivea. But I didn't know, and nobody else seemed to know either when I asked them.

Let's rewind about a year. Its June 5th, 2007. "Umbrella" is blowing up the radio right now, and so is "Buy U a Drank". And I'm already a big Rihanna fan, so I head down to Best Buy (yes, I did used to work there, and that's probably one of the few places you know me from, anyway...) to go buy her CD. And looking at the ad, I also see the T-pain had released the same day. Now I was never a big "Sprung" or "Stripper" fan of the Rappa Ternt Sanga, but homie was taking over 07 at the time, and "Buy U a Drank" was my joint, so I decide to cop both CDs. It'll be something for the ladies anyway. I listen to the CD a bit.... and it was aight. It was bangin. But not something I would bang on a regular basis. But there were some standout songs definitely. And during one "nighttime liason" after the club... I recall a particular song playing in the background for a looonnnggg period of time on repeat. Only to get tired of the song after I realized it was playing, and change it to the next song (and I'm sure yall know that song, called "Put it down". I'll post it at the end of the blog).

Fast Forward back to today. So after hearing that song apparently called, "The Business". I immediately think, "Aint this T-Pain? But it don't sound like him rappin at all. And I have no idea who that girl is. And why would he make a remix to a song off an old album, when his new one is finna come out." In the next few weeks, the song gets even more popular. People tell me, "This is yung berg, but I dont know who the girl is." Popping up on peoples myspace pages, and people singing it everywhere. So I go home and break out my T-Pain CD, only to have confirmed what I thought. I get to the song, "Backseat Action ft Shawnna", (take a listen http://share.ovi.com/media/mikeg.public/mikeg.10020 ) and the first thing T-pain sings is, "I'm bout to pull over, and give you the business..." YUNG BERG IS A FUCKIN BITER. I mean, oh my gawd, who BLATANTLY jacks somebodies elses song, and uses it like its an original.

Now I've never liked Yung Bird... I mean Berg. I remember getting my hair braided one morning and seeing his video for the first time. That "Sexxy lady" song. I thought "WACK" immediately. But it caught on. The ladies liked it... and that's more important when it comes to selling records today. Then I saw homie perform last year at the Russ Parr thing they do every year downtown. Homie came out like he was straight "gangster" (read: wankster) which some wack song nobody knew with his 5'5ft self (one of my female homies almost snatched his chain, lmao). Then he disappeared, only to reappear with Brandy's little Brother, with anutha "SEXXY" song (read: diva). The ladies liked that too. But then homie found himself catching beefs with everybody he can in the game, after talking to 50 (Didn't I just mention he was a diva). Between beefing with Bow Wow (how ironic) and Brisco and Flo-Rida (You know Brisco, everybody got "The Carter 3") and having his album pushed back 12 times, he records "The Business"... another "sexxy" song if you ask me. But what really disgusted me was the lack of originality in the song. First off was the beyond obvious jacking of the chorus from T-Pain. Then two was the fact that I still have no idea what Yung Berg actually sounds like. This time around, he sounds like Bow Wow... like I mentioned above. Who he just got done calling out a couple months ago. Then three... how many people are gonna blatantly use the auto-tune effect when just a year or so ago, the very same people were calling T-Pain a gimmick. And now that homie is THE KING of the radio, everyone from Snoop, to 50, Tony Yayo, Weezy... just to name a few are using the same effect.

So as I went home this morning, noticing everybody was totally oblivious, to this obvious plunder of style, I thought I'd tell you about it. And what makes at even worse, is that this new song has absolutely nothing on the original. Yung Berg can't even go by the, "You made at a hot line, I made it a hot song" creed. ITS TRASH!!! (Go back, listen to both, you tell me) I have no respect for yung turd, and will continue to completely ignore this song as though it doesnt exist (unless I'm in the club, hittin it on one of these "Don Imuses" lmao.) Or maybe Im just Hatin... WHAT U THINK??

Be On The Look Out : Jazmine Sullivan

Always tryna keep you informed on the new stuff and keepin you one step ahead of the raido.. I had to inform the world about this new singer.. her name is Jazmine Sullivan

I first heard about her when I read a VIBE article or maybe XXL.. doesnt matter.. but I like to read on people that I dont know so that when I hear them I can connect more.. The article described her as a new soul singer with comparisons to Lauryn Hill.. I was like "hold up.. aint no one like my Lauryn, u cant compare no one to none of my Lauryns... Hill or London"
But one day I think the TV was on while I was on the computer.. and I heard this song.. called NEED U BAD.. and I previously forgot about the article til I heard this song.. And man, the comparison is pretty good.. the feeling, sound and the soul of the song is sooo much of what I wanna hear from Lauryn.. This song, helped by Missy Elliot, is the shit.. the groove is smooth.. something you just catch yourself singing a lil too loud that the person in the car next to you looks over at you.. Im feeling this one..

So hearing this.. i had to do some more research.. I read up on her on her myspace (which i suggest you visit www.myspace.com/jazminesullivan ).
She is a 21 yr old, philly born singer who is signed to J records. She been around singing with Stevie Wonder, Kirk Franklin and philly natives Kindred. Word got around of her vocal skills to Missy and she brought her in the studio which got caught the attention of record labels..
A year of creating her own writing style and creating imaginative song such as one about her vision of the wizard of oz call "Lions, Tigers and Bears" lead her to her first meeting with the head of J Records, Clive Davis. After hearing her, he said simply "Welcome to the family". We also welcome her, us music lovers, the ones who love feelings in our songs, soul in our songs, something we can relate to, bc we need this.

Go to her page and listen to "In Love With Another Man". Its a raw, stripped down song.. with just her and a piano and couple back ground singers. It tell the story of her being in love with someone other than the one that she is with. Story of my life right? I've already heard this song before I even played it.. Its the "its not you, its me" story. I love it.. She says all of the things that girls say to the nice guys.. She speaks on how the one shes with treats her, loves her and does her right.. but she is still in love with someone else.. The second verse speak on how good the man is.. how anyone would love to have a good man like him.. but she is still in love with someone else. Its such a honest story.. This is what we need more of..

Just after hearing these 2 songs.. i'm puttin my stamp on this one.. if she doesnt do good.. it wont be her fault.. it would def be the labels fault.. she is the truth.. I suggest you go experience... after you do that.. tell me what u think

My Love Letter (P.D.A.)

Dear ______,

How u doin? I missed you today.. been missing you my whole life forreal.. Glad u finally got your mind right and recognized a real man.. yes MAN.. not dude, nigga, boy, young adult or anything less than a man.. God has blessed you and me with a bond that He has been strenghtening that he has had planned since before we made it on this Earth. So many times I've doubted God that you were here for me, but my faith in His word keep me goin and not worryin about all these other GURLS. I found me a real one, a treasure that is so priceless that I could never trade you in. I feel like God made you for me.. and me only.. I like that. All the wrongs that we been through before made us right for each other. Think of all the bullshit relationships I been through... the arguments, heartache, all the attention they wanted from everyone but me, all the cheating, and wasted time.

None of these things well ever describe our relationship. My love for you make these other gurls jealous.. but a real woman would respect my love, dedication and respect for you. Could it be jealousy? Prolly, cuz niggas dont give half a fuck about them as much as I do you.

They know that when they ask me, "What you thinking about?" I always say you.. Its like I was meant to be with you.. I love that.. I feel as if my purpose in life is to show that TRUE LOVE does exist.. there are still good men out here.. yall just dont treat them right, yall dont pay no attention to them, yall just wanna be FRIENDS with them, you never take the chance to see how good he can be to you.. you are missing out on the realness of a good relationship chasing these niggas that you kno are on bullshit.. but thats fine.. I LOOOOOOVVEEE mine...

I've always felt as if cant no one make me better.. cant no one give me MY name.. i feel as if i determine all of this.. no one can make me better... until I met you.. you got my swag so hard.. you got me turning my face to all these weak groupies.. the ones who dont know my real name.. the ones who wanna know DJDURL.. not Darrell.. You know me. I thank you for being around when money was low.. when my car was down... when i felt like I was the only one in the world who had problems... when i felt there was no solution.. the days when i didnt wanna get outta bed.. you been my heart.. my joy.. my ALL

I know this isnt like me to show my feelings.. im MR I DONT GIVE A FUCK.. when have i showed my feelings to these other chicks.. I might have showed a lil bit.. but nothing as strong or deep as this... I cant help it.. I been chasing all these other chicks.. you know.. the good-haired light skinned ones.. or the thick brown skinned ones.. you know how much I love them.. but never have i been blinded so much by you..Fuck all them other weak ass niggas you been with.. i prolly only respect a couple of them niggas.. but we both you know.. you been with some weak niggas... esp when you compare them to me.. excuse my arrogance or confidence... but I know me.. I know my love.. my devotion.. all that.. you were made for me.. and i was meant to fall for you..

I love you Hip Hop stay with me forever

Lovers and bestFriends

Started on May9th:

In our constant search for the right one... how do we kno the one when we see it? We all have our own list of what our nearest to perfect match would be.. right? I kno i do and damn near always have.. i have the ones that i have as interest.. and ones that i just want around my life to help and coach and see me grow... the two i seperate as "Lovers" and "Bestfriends". Both of the two i always wanna be around.. Ive always been more cool with women more than men.. so ive always had a few bestfriends on deck since middle school..

The main thing that was the difference was the Lovers were the ones that i was more emotionally and physically involved with.. Bestfriends, were the ones who kept me mentally intrigued, most are the real smart girls who usually care the most about me.. my bestfriends are really territorial.. they genuinely care for me from the inside out.. they care about how im feeling today.. how my family is.. when we gonna kick it and get drunk.. all the good things..The lovers are usually the ones i get blinded by infactuation with.. not always the best for me but i never see it bc they show me that lil bit of attention that my bestfriends dont.. b/c these gurls are attracted to me.. bestfriend isnt.. she just loves me.. the lover wants me.. sometimes u want to be wanted.. and thats what kept me there.. blinded by that i constantly got my feelings hurt.. which is when my bestfriends put the pieces back together and bring me back up to the level i need to be... Bestfriend is always the one tellin you.. "she aint shit.. she just like u cuz u DJ DURL, i love Darrell, she dont even kno the real you"... then i hit her with the beatbox and tell her she trippin.. cuz remember.. im blinded.. cuz this gurl fits what i want in a chick:Attractive, Attentive to me, Understands me, is honest with me, and is about something..

Or so i thought.. when them true colors show.. my bestfriend is always there for me.. telling me i told u so, and telling me how much she hate that bitch and that she better not see her on the streets... yadda yadda.. soundin like my crazy ass sister.. but with all of this knowledge of what is good for me.. why isnt the bestfriend the one?? why is the bestfriend being unnoticed as the X-factor that makes things better.. not sayin a chick will ever make me better.. but it would be a plus to have one in the equation.. feel me?These thoughts have been in my thoughts lately.. i have a few bestfriends.. all of which i love very much.. all have been there for me at different times in my life and have been like a backbrace.. and keepin my head up like i got a nose bleed or something. My bestfriends give me all the confidence and swag that makes me who i am forreal.. my BFs tell me how much of a good person i am and how stupid chix are for not seeing it and keepin it.. wouldnt they be in the same catergory?

I feel as if im rambling.. but I think my bestfriends are the prototypes of some of the strongest women i know.. all have had their struggle with the wrong men and are now on the right path and keepin it moving.. they are taking care of themselves and their babies if they have one.. they are not ur typical Dayton chix.. these chix are what i want in a woman...

Hence the situation, when is it ok to like your bestfriend? I mean you already love them, you already know them and their fam, you already know their favorite color, drink, meal and how they want their wedding to be... so why not?? Whats holding you both back? You two are so close, why not be close? you dont want no one to hurt the other, and you know that you wouldn't, so why not? What is the potential harm in "connecting" with your bestfriend? Why cant that just be a better friend, better than you ever thought? Do act like you never looked at her when she bends over... Dont act like you do look at him when he's driving and your in the passenger seat... Dont act like you do say "who is that bitch?" when some chick comes and gives him a hug when yall both out together as "bestfriends".

"Bestfriends", is this your "just in case" person, is this who you finally choose when you are too lonely, and not getting the looks like you use too? Is this the person that you "might as well" mess with? Think of your opposite sex bestfriend, how would you feel if you asked them how they about you... and they say "I liked you from the begining.."? Would that scare you? would you be ashamed bc now you ex would tell you, "I told you so". Because... who really trusts their partners bestfriend of the opposite sex? I wouldnt. Would you embark on that? Would this mess up all that you built? or will this be the cherry on the top? A lot of questions right?Thinking of all of this, what if you do explain how much you do love and like your bestfriend, and they actually feel the same... what do you do next? You can't call them bestfriend no more can you? Aint nothing that will take away a sexy moment than being called "Bestfriend" instead of your real name.. Are you losing a bestfriend while gaining a companion? Who do you tell your personal problems to now, you would usually tell them about your daily problems, problems with the opposite sex and etc. You can't do that no more?? What if things dont work? Yall just supposed to act like this never happened? You cant do thatWith all of these words... statements.. and questions.. what would you do? Dive in and say fuck it? Or say hell nah? Let me know..

Finished on July17th

The Best Rapper alive... does it even matter???

Nowadayz, I dont really think titles mean anything. They've lost their luster. Personally, if you ask me----my favorite rapper is Nas....for those who don't know. But as far as who I think the best rapper alive is... omg, there's no question, it's Jay-Z. But let's not start an arguement here. I know, I know... Lil Wayne/Wayne/Weezy/T-Wayne/Young Money..... WHATEVER!! That's not the point right now. Let's look at this from another perspectvie. All my 80's babies.... where you at. Let's take it back. When you were in school.... and I mean IN SCHOOL. Back at your elementary/middle school/high school (C-DUB!!!!! Sorry, had to throw that in there) What were you listening to: Ice Cube, NWA, 2pac, Wu-tang (all 79 of them), Bone Thugs, Puffy (dont lie, yo azz wanted a shiny suit) Ma$e, Jay-z, Fugees, Master P/No Limit, Scarface, Biggie, Nas.... you get the point. I missed a lot of people, but the fact is you remember all the people for the greatness they were/are. You had variety on who you could call your favorite rapper. They respected the craft, went in hard with their souls. You still got they old tapes (come on, yall had them tapes, next to your old CrazySexyCool wit the tape coming out that it won't play no more) that was so good, you listened to them shits for weeks/months, and it didn't get old... and it wasnt your ringtone. And you couldn't wait to call 222-9292 (U.92, come on yall) to see if they would play it. The point is, you were excited about a particualr person... you know they were coming with that shit. Fast Forward to today. Who's your favorite rapper???? Like I said, Lil wayne (and maybe T.I.). Now Im not hatin, I like Weezy. Aint been a career long fan, but I got the Carter trilogy, and I got maadd respect for homie. The problem is... who else is your favorite rapper. Back then you had a lot of choices. But the shit is so bad today, you look for ONE person. Rap at its height (IMO, the mid to late 90's) everybody went Platinum, if you put out something hott. But today, everybody got the BEST single... then that nigga disappear. Let's give a short list: Mimz, Rich Boy, 2Pistols, Hot Stylez, D4L, Shawty Lo, Franchize Boys, J-Kwon...... hell, I cant remember most of these people names... THEY NOBODIES. But they all rapped your favorite song at one point.... and now who are they??? Old erased ringtones... old DJDurl mixtapes you cant find, or you let somebody borrow and they never gave it back. What happened to when homies like Mystikal, or DMX, or Mia X, or Outkast, etc... was finna release an album, and EVERYBODY was talking about it months before it came out??? But now, if you disappear from the public for more than 3 months... everybody forgot about you. You must be dead... or wack... or something. You must have fallen off. Thats why I got so much respect for Jay though. Since 96', he came in to prove that he was going to be the best ever. Releasing the Classic Reasonable Doubt, he didnt stop just cause he had something hot on his handz. He hit you up in 97', then 98', then 99', and every year there after... even into retirement, he wouldn't let his name fall into obscurity. From "Aint no Nigga" to "Blue Magic", aint no nigga hit us with magic so routinely, it seemed effortless. So shout out to Young Carter, go harder, go further go farther, thats why you came, if not, then why bother. Bring some rap magic back to this game, cuz frankly, Im bored as fuck. What you think????

Da Introduction

ALLOW ME TO REINTRODUCE MYSELF
MY NAME IS RAS

Firsts are so cliche. And then you find yourself, trying to figure out what to say. But anyone who knows me, knows I alwayz know what to say. Nas - FRIED CHICKEN

NAS - FRIED CHICKEN
When reading the title of this song.. i was like.. what type of rap metaphor could he be usin on this song.. must be about some hot chick.. who knows? Im not a Nas fan, at all.. I respect dude.. sorta like Kobe.. Kobe can hoop.. he good as hell.. but I just dont like him. Same goes for Nas.
Okay.. so the song.. is actually about Friend Chicken.. my favorite.. of course its my fav... im black.. im a nigga.. at least that what they call me, right?
But the lyrics to this song sounds like a KKK dude made them.. a very poetic KKK memeber... never have I heard such a strong ode to fried chicken.. I cant listen to it without laughing.. all the metaphors are sooo on point.. i dont know to be offended or to bob my head.. I dont even wanna learn the word bc I might slip and recite them in front of a white person.. and they would laugh prolly.. I need not be the butt of no white persons joke about my skin color and my eating habits... its in my DNA as dave chappelle said..
This "nigger" said "you a bird but aint a key/got wings, but you cant fly away from me/in your bucket seats/all the way from kentucky to fuck with me"... so many metaphors just in those few lines.. I know you all are smart enuff to catch that theres one in each line quoted..
He speaks on how Lousiana Red Hot she (fried chicken) is and then after he is done with "her", he needs rest... also known as the ITIS...
He also speaks on her and her roll dogs, mac and cheese and candied yams is killing him.. His addiction is goin to bring his death..
Then Busta Rhymes joins in the poultry poetry... he also spits with so many descriptive adjective and metephors that sound as if he's talking about/to a chicken.. when he's really speakin on chicken and hamhocks...

The record does serves as good awareness to the effects that our infactuation with fowl with have a dying effect on us.. they got this song all the way off.. i respect this one... Good one Nas...

Minor Introduction... More later...

I Feel Like Im Losing My Love

You should know by now... I DJ.. I mix.. i do all that..
its been in my head and my heart as long as I can remember
Theres never a time when there isn't a song in my head.. but here lately.. the songs in my head aint new ones.. Whats wrong with the state of hip hop and music in 08.. yeah, there the obvious few people that keep the train goin, but where is everyone else? where the fresh new faces, where the vets bringing all the heat for the summer.. the summer time is when i should wanna be in the club.. the only song now a days i wanna hear in the club is Soulja Boys "DONK" bc the gurls go crazy..
I think back on the FUSION days when there wasnt a minute that u could comfortably go to the bar or sit down bc your song was magnetically sendin you back to that sweaty dance floor to get up on the chick with the curly hair, big booty and the white capris...we all know her and we all the songs that we used to hear and how jumpin those days were... Now.. i can be up in Fever or Ice and be just chillin on the couches, holding up a wall or chillin on a pillar with no reason to even stand behind a chick.. The songs that get me goin are when the "good" DJs do like a Jay Z set, or a 90s set or something that aint so current. Dont get me wrong, like i said earlier.. its a few good songs.. but i shouldnt have to stress the word "few" so hard when speakin of good music.
I mean damn, people expect me to make 3 mixtapes a month, and ill be damn if i make that many mixtapes with the bullshit they puttin out these days.. how long will I have to wait til the next season for music to be hot??
what do u think?
